Superman returns

I watched ‘Superman returns’ this weekend. I wore my Superman T-shirt too. It’s great to be passionate about something and totally get absorbed in the hype. Hype sells in America, and hell, I’m buyin it!

Perhaps I was too forgiving of the movie’s apparent flaws, but overall I think it was a 2.5 hours well spent with the greatest comic book hero ever created. In a nutshell, here’s what I liked and disliked:

* Brandon Routh. I think he’s a hunk and he was perfect as Clarke Kent and Superman. Sure, he isn’t as believable as Peter Parker from Spiderman who’s an everyday wimp to begin with. But Brandon was in my opinion a great selection.

* Computer Graphics – I can only imagine the movies to come in the decades that follow. Stunning visual effects

* Lois’ family – One mistake perhaps every movie makes is to have the heroine dating/married to a guy who’s generally a pig. Like the way Kate Winslet’s husband in the Titanic turned out to be a selfish egocentric arrogant tycoon, just so that the way is clear for DiCaprio and Kate to have their fling on the sinking ship. But the heroine’s dating a great guy in this movie, and he’s kind enough to go back to save Superman with his plane. Tough luck, Superman. Thumbs up, nice husband.

* Yeah I agree, the plot sucked.
* Kevin Spacey could not have had a worse role. He looked terrible bald.
* Lex Luthor was a stereotypical villian with a stupid plot to take over the world. His wife or partner in the movie was confusing. It was confusing why Lex Luthor was with a woman who chucked the crystals from the chopper. Weird.
* Unlike Spidey, Superman has no mask. It is strange that Lois can’t recognize Clark Kent. But I guess this flaw is aplenty in the comic book too, so nothing the movie could’ve changed about it.

When I came out of the movie, i was AWED. not disappointed. So if you love the hype and you are passionate about that ‘S’ , this is a must watch. But please be forgiving.

  1. “flaws” would definitely be an understatement. I was truly disappointed.. I mean, I love the comic but the movie was So fell flat!

  2. here’s a tip..
it’s worth a watch. several aspects or portions of it were copied from various popular hollywood movies..
disclaimer: i went in expecting crap, and therefore came out impressed

  3. I liked the movie too and I agree you have to be forgiving. Although I thought Lex Luther wasn’t bad. What I hated – Superman on a hospital bed…!!!

  4. Superman on a hospital bed was kinda nice because they try to give a ‘human’ not-so-invincible side to him …. all super hero movies these days are relying on the audience relating not to the action hero, but the Peter parker, the clarke kent, and the bruce wayne…

So yeah, i kinda liked the human side of superman … what I didn’t like though was how he woke up from the dead….

i digress but why do all movies including the Matrix have to have a ‘kiss of life’ cliche in them?
