Summer Movie Scorecard

From best to worst …

Ratatouille A+

Yeah, I know, I said things like ‘Maybe the Animated/CG movie phase has lost its charm on me’ in my review of Shrek 3. But thankfully, my faith has been restored. As long as I keep away from watching every animated movie (Robinsons, Over the hedge, Madagascar, Robots, Cars ) and stick to only the ones with good reviews, I should be fine. Anyway, about the movie, you’ll just fall in love – with Paris, with Fine dining, with Art. The movie is a masterpiece on every level – the scenes are rich like paintings, the story is clever, the characters endearing, the humour witty, and the french accent unbeatable. Watch in a theater, though, or at least high quality DVD.

Complaints: None whatsoever :)
Transformers A-

I was apprehensive about watching this movie since I heard mixed reviews about it. But I guess it is all about expecting the right thing. If you go in expecting exactly what is intended as a viewer – a loud action flick with sleek vehicles turning into robots and vice versa, you will get exactly what you ask for.

The graphics were simply mind-blowing, the humour was fun, the action was fast paced, and the story line was just about enough for a mindless action movie.

Complaints: Product placements ! Arrgh !
Knocked up A-

Knocked up

This movie was great. Superb acting, awesome humour, romantic without being corny. A weird love story, but one that is pretty believable.

Complaints: Few graphic scenes that have the director probably saying ‘Gotcha! this wasn’t rated R for nothing! ‘ , but its all in good fun.

1408 A-

Spooky without the gore. Really liked it. Not sure if you horror fans will consider it worthy enough though.

Ocean’s 13 B+

Entertaining movie, had fun watching it.

Complaints: Suffered a little fatigue of being the 3rd installment, but was decent enough.

Spiderman 3 B+

Expected more!

Complaints: Peter Parker spent more time crying than fighting … the movie was too long, and the villains were too many.

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer C+

Fantastic four

This movie was as pointless as part 1. When will the directors learn that fancy CG alone will not save a movie anymore? Jurassic Park was more than a decade ago ! CG cannot save a bad movie !

The fact that it was converted to a ‘family movie’ and that majority of the crowd comprised of little kids made it less appealing to me. As usual, great graphics but goofy story and very un-witty dialogue. It doesn’t do anything new, there are too many holes in the plot … but heck, if there’s nothing better to do, it’s not that terrible.

  1. oops…thats more movies than I have watched since Jan 2006 :)

  3. Wow! You actually gave Spidey 3 B+!!

Not only were the villians too many, the whole fantastical aspect about superheroes and villains was shredded to pieces.
Why did they all take off their masks everytime they had to make a point?!

Parker taking off his shoes and emptying the sand off them..aww! madae for such a pitiable scene :(

I agree, Parker boy cried more than one of those Ma’s in a bollywood flick. And of course, the editing left much to be desired…I couldn’t believe I saw that long shot of Parker’s midriff when he is walking down the road singing and dancing…Or maybe, I just didn’t know the significance of it at all.

Spidey 3 was a complete letdown. The only upper was seeing Stan Lee in a cameo :)

  4. @Joy: “Wow! You actually gave Spidey 3 B+!!”

I must admit it was fun watching it on the first day first show here with a crowd full of enthu fans, some even dressed up head to toe like spidey/venom ! :) It was only after I got out of the theater and thought about the movie that I realized it wasn’t half as good as it could/should have been.

“Why did they all take off their masks everytime they had to make a point?!”

    Cuz you can’t see them teary-eyes through a mask ? :P

  5. Just caught ‘Transformers’ yesterday. Not only were the graphics off the chart, Megan Fox was the cherry on the cake…

Its funny how after 20 odd years, I still remember so much about the transformers.

    Can’t wait for parts 2 and 3.

  6. Yup, it’s exciting :) .. we’re going to be seeing the Transformers sequels well into and probably past this decade ! Great to know that in all probability, there’s going to be a Transformers 3 waiting for us in 2010 :)…

  7. A- for transformers?? I’ve given up on your sense of rating movies :P

If you thought transformers was that good, step back a bit, and compare it to X-Men 3. It’s an action movie, fantastical just like Xformers. I recommend you watch it again. I did (again), just last weekend, and was blown away by how good an action movie can be if they just try. (Incidentally, I discovered that the director of X3 is not the same as that of the first 2 parts.) The graphics were comparable (especially towards the ending of XMen), though Xformers is sexier just cuz, well, we’re all still teenage boys in love with robots and moving mechanical parts.

    [Hey where’s your Spoiler Warnings??]

  8. Well in terms of ‘Summer movies’ it definitely did get an A- :) . It’s hard to keep track of all the movies you’ve ever watched to give a realistic rating … like if I think about Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind, it’ll have to be like A++++ ? This rating thing is still a work in progress :P. I agree X3 would be A++ at least.

Given the fact that I was going ‘Whooooah’ through most of the movie due to the sexiness of the whole thing, it’d be pretty hypocritical of me to give it a B or C because I analysed it *after* the movie and thought hmmm… it wasn’t that good. Most of the ratings are reflective of what exactly I thought during the movie …

As for the Spoiler warnings, wait, did I give anything away .. it doesn’t seem like it. I generally give the warnings only when I’m critiquing and dissecting movies… this seemed like only an ‘on the surface’ thing.. but yeah, I’ll be more careful next time …

  9. If I had to rate the movies:

    Ratatouille – A+
    Transformers – A+
    Knocked Up – B+
    1408 – A-
    Ocean’s 13 – C+
    Spiderman 3 – C-
    Fantastic Four – C-

Transformers was exactly the way the cartoon was. Wow! It was great seeing animated transformers in the “real world” on big screen! I didn’t like Fantastic four much. I thought it was a little cheesy. Spiderman 3 was the worst! Sheesh..

Gosh! Am I the only one besides you who’s as big a movie buff? :D
