Lending a SIM card while brown[ updated ]

Mohammed Haneef, an Indian doctor from Australia, is in his 2nd week of interrogation. Today he moves into solitary confinement for 23 hours a day . The highlights of the case so far:

  • He once lived with the people involved in the UK Terrorist attacks
  • One of the attackers, Kafeel Ahmed, is related to him.
  • Haneef had credit on his SIM card in the UK, so he gave it to his cousin Kafeel
  • Haneef is accused of ‘Reckless support of a terrorist group’, for the SIM card
  • He is accused of witholding information about the attack, though he claims he knew nothing about it
  • The courts cleared him and gave him bail, but the governement cancelled his visa anyway

Here is an opinion article by a right-winger in the Australian news who claims everything was done by the law. I was happy to read the comments though, there seemed to an even number of left and right wingers in the discussion. Here is his wife’s side of the story. And (don’t you love the internet?) , here is a pdf file on the grounds for canceling Haneef’s visa.

If in 20 odd days of interrogation, they have been unable to connect him to the crime in any way, chances are that he’s just an unlucky relative of a radicalized islamist. Canceling his visa before his guilt was substantiated is to succumb to Xenophobia and the Austrailian right-wingers ought to be ashamed of themselves.

[Update: Its over ! The charges have finally been dropped. He was in custody for 23 days ]

  1. Looks like its taken for granted that “flying, phtotographing.. etc. while brown” is reason enough to cast suspicions of terrorist plotting and planning running on in the brown man’s head. Haneef is alleged with not one but two of these ‘crimes’…

I was surprised to read this in the morning newspaper “”

“…a media report that the Australian Federal Police (AFP) were examining whether Dr. Haneef was involved in a terror plot in Australia itself. He was alleged to have taken photographs of some landmark buildings on the Gold Coast of Queensland.”

“AFP Commissioner Mick Keelty, in a statement, dismissed the media story on Dr. Haneef as inaccurate”
.. though that does not extenuate the damages made..

I guess now brown people will be wary of clicking pictures of landmark structures on foreign soil..

The “— while brown” phenomenon is turning into a dangerous mindset. You could add it to your iHate list.. !

  2. Well the whole of europe is now paranoid.

Sometimes they come up with something really ridiculous ideas. Its a pain now to travel by flights. I remeber recently I was standing in the queue for the security check and my elbow just brushed across hand luggage of the british guy standing infront on me, and you know what he looks at me with a wierd expression on his face and puts down and opened up his bag just to look into it, what the hell was I supposed to have done.

  3. @Meenakshi – Thanks for the update on the story. Last I heard, he seemed to be getting a lot of support from the Australian Left and that was a good sign. Photographing is definitely becoming a major crime these days… and the worst part is with all the ‘You Citizens are the eyes and ears of the police’ going on, everyday citizens are taking it upon themselves to report anything they find ‘suspicious’ … So now the citizens feel more powerful and more at ease to use their discretion to report stuff.. and if they are even slightly Xenophobic, which is not a surprise at all considering that even top-level diplomats are (as we have seen in the case of the Aussie immigration minister ), we get reported.

Consequently, us Browns are considered to be plotting our next terrorist attacks even if we as much as take pics of a few pretty buildings .

Man, that incident is really crazy … such things just make you feel like a walking disease, whom no one should interact with. You must have felt like an a$$ while he was inspecting his stuff … I’m guessing he thought you tossed a bomb in there or something

  4. yeah I am the one :) ..

I didn’t feel like an A$$ though, I just found it funny really funny and wanted laugh at him. Most of them are ignorant about the rest of the world and the media doesn’t really show them the truth or rather complete truth, here news papers are about where “britney spears gonna get drunk and puke”

Over all I think its the govt’s doing.. making people panicky. I mean I was carrying nivea moisturising cream coz I was travelling just for 2 days and they said no liquids… and he threw of my stuff in the bin… I am not supposed to carry more than 100ml, what the hell am I gonna do with NIVEA cream.
